Spring 2015 : Workshop : Interpreting the Landscape: Painting and Pastel: Ryan Russell

Enjoy the colors of spring and views of House Mountain and the Blue Ridge, then linger after painting for an optional wine tasting and wine release party. This workshop, based on a contemporary colorist’s approach to art, will highlight ways to push color and use gesture as an animating force. Students will learn to assess and describe the landscape intuitively and analytically. The instructor will demonstrate techniques in oil and pastel and discuss his work and philosophy. Students may choose to work with one or both mediums, developing numerous small color studies in order to evaluate color, atmospheric effects and compositional strengths. Workshop participants (age 21+) are entitled to a free wine tasting and invited to the Saturday evening wine release party featuring live music and wine with new labels featuring Ryan’s paintings from the vineyard. www.ryanmrussell.com

Spring 2015 : Workshop : Oil Painting and Color Essentials: Kathleen Carey Hall

Working with a series of limited palettes, students will learn how to mix color and create a balanced composition. We will work from still lifes, gradually learning to express the complicated visual world by use of simple shapes of color. In addition to using color to express light, form, and space, students will get a feel for various ways of manipulating paint. www.kathleencareyhall.com

Spring 2015 : Workshop : Landscape Studies with Pastel:

Pastel is an excellent medium for working quickly in the landscape because of its portability and ease of use. Doing a series of small studies, we will record sensations of color, texture, light and space with simple shapes and painterly mark-making. We will work with a limited palette of Nupastels, using a process of layering and optical color mixing to develop form, color and composition. The emphasis is on a direct, intuitive response to the motif. Previous plein air drawing or painting experience is useful but not necessary. Mostly we will be working en plein air, but part of the class will also be conducted in the classroom doing transcriptions of masterworks. Students may bring soft pastels in addition to the Nupastels.

To keep things simple, students will work in black and white acrylic paint on a 30″ x 48″ or 48″ x 60″ preprimed canvas. Some experience in drawing or painting required. www.EASchweitzer.com

Beginning with an overview of the history of portraiture and the materials and practices of portraitists through the centuries, the instructor will discuss palettes, color theory, and how to create a likeness, then provide a targeted demonstration from the model. Students will paint a small head study in the medium of their choice. A critique will follow. There will be opportunities to ask and answer questions regarding painting in general, and portraiture in particular. http://www.pafa.edu/faculty-members/al-gury

Spring 2015 : Workshop : Materials, Metaphor and Memory:

Creativity, like memory, tends to sneak up on you! Students are encouraged to work intuitively as they create their own artistic narrative using a variety of materials in a collage format. Through the manipulation of rich oil color, dry pigments and beeswax students capture each gesture in the creative process as materials, color and memory become a reflection of a personal space. Not suitable for students with a sensitivity to melted beeswax.
