Summer 2014 : Workshop : Painting Animals with Confidence: Nancy Bass

Animals have been an inspiration for artists throughout history. This workshop will concentrate on how to bring animals to life with oil paints using color, light, and composition. We will be working with photographs, so bring several good photos of your animals or wildlife. During this intensive course, students will receive one-on-one instruction and insight into the techniques needed to master the art of the animal. Returning students will continue in advanced techniques of color and form in painting animals. www.nancybassartist.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Painting Your Travel Adventures in Watercolor: Peg Sheridan

Learn creative ways to approach scenes you see when you travel. We will focus on two aspects: painting plein air with watercolors, and painting more exciting watercolors from the photos you bring home with you. The emphasis will be on learning how to quickly sketch from life (with paint, pencil, and other materials), and how to use your photos to create paintings that are more beautiful than the photo! Class will involve demonstrations, hands-on exercises indoors and out, and individual help. Bring a bag lunch, and enjoy the day! Basic previous watercolor experience required. www.pegsheridan.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Sculpt and Draw the Portrait: Elise Schweitzer

This workshop will focus on one of the most intriguing subjects in representational art: the portrait. Through a combination of drawing and sculpting exercises, we will explore the planes of the face and the expressive possibilities of our features while mastering the inner anatomical structure of the human head. www.EASchweitzer.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Three Evenings of Drawing: Exploratory Exercises to Enhance Artistic Expression: Janly Jaggard

Competent visual artists rely on good drawing skills to analyze, understand, plan, compose and create successful work. This workshop will feature essential drawing skills required to grow as an artist, regardless of media. Various materials and approaches will be explored as students engage with the process of drawing, rather than focusing on a finished product. Subject matter will include still life, interiors and figure drawing. www.janlyjaggard.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Mixed Media Explorations with Watercolor: Leslie Banta

Make watercolor work in a mixed media format, taking a traditional medium into abstract realms! Using newly-released watercolor grounds, we will explore possibilities with collage and layering, as well as painting with watercolor on unusual surfaces. Take these ideas wherever you go by assembling a portable mixed media kit, including making a pocket-sized watercolor palette. Incorporate collage and printmaking techniques, use stencils and watercolor resists, refreshing your mindset so you can loosen up and try something you’ve never done with watercolor before! Materials fee includes portable wc palette and product samples you will use in class. Paint and brushes will be provided by students. www.lesliebanta.com

Summer 2014 : Class : Painting Critique: Summer Project: Robert Stuart

In the first session, students will bring a “project plan” which should include visuals to show – sketches, studies, photos, etc. – and share their inspirations, influences, and any other source material. During the second session, we will look at beginnings, ongoing work (including any ongoing research toward the project), and consider issues that have come up as the work has started. The third session will consist of student presentations of the completed projects. www.robertstuart.net

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Relief Printmaking(Camp):

Explore the possibilities of relief printmaking! Prints offer an opportunity to experiment with color, repeated design and negative/positive space. Create both fine and functional pieces with this versatile process. Possible topics will include linoleum relief prints (including reduction prints and over-printing) as well as “built up” prints (such as cardboard or foam prints). If time allows, students may try “pochoir” prints using stencils and cut paper.

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Watercolor the Natural Way: Essential Techniques for All (Camp): Shay Herring Clanton

Students will begin in the studio learning fundamental watercolor techniques including color mixing and glazing, beautiful spontaneous washes, brushwork skills and creative textures, plus methods for watercolor sketching. We will move outside to create a series of watercolor paintings including both quick energetic sketches that are wonderful for personal or travel journals, as well as more finished paintings. Some drawing experience is helpful, but not required. www.shayherringclanton.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Painting with Wax: An Introduction to Encaustics(Camp): Martha Saunders

This workshop will introduce the encaustic process. Students will learn to build translucent layers of color and use collage materials to create beeswax-based compositions on wood panels. There will be an emphasis on experimentation with this versatile medium: carving, embedding, fusing materials and applying color will all come into play. Not suitable for students with a sensitivity to melted beeswax. www.marthasaunders.com

Summer 2014 : Workshop : Drawing for Advanced Beginners (Camp):

This class is aimed toward those with some background in drawing basics, but who want to develop added confidence and proficiency. It is especially geared toward those who enjoy drawing for its own sake, and not simply as a stepping stone to painting. We will explore the expressive possibilities of charcoal, chalk, and Conté crayon. Each class meeting will focus on a single theme: still life, landscape, streetscape, and figure. Throughout, we will review and reinforce sound technical practices and critical thinking.

Fall 2014 : Workshop : Draw+Paint+Paint: Jessie Coles

In this three day still life painting workshop, the first day will be devoted to drawing as a strategy for developing composition. A range of drawing exercises, such as tonal studies, gestural drawings and thumbnail sketches will be presented, as well as a few practical drawing strategies. We will look at, draw, and discuss composition as seen in paintings by master artists, then use some of our newfound insights to arrange a still life from the ground up. With these compositional ideas in mind, we will spend the next two days painting a still life. For oil painters. www.JessieColesPainting.weebly.com

Fall 2014 : Workshop : Painting from Life: A Poetic Approach to Color in the Landscape: Ryan Russell

Somewhere between observation and imagination, lies the contemporary colorist’s approach to art. This workshop will explore ways to push color and add poetic expression to paintings. Students will be encouraged to take risks and develop a personal and intuitive use of color to express and describe the landscape. The instructor will demonstrate techniques in oil and pastel and discuss his work and philosophy. Students may choose to work with one or both mediums. Extra emphasis will be placed on making numerous small color studies in order to assess color and atmospheric effects and compositional strengths. www.ryanmrussell.com

Fall 2014 : Workshop : Jewelry Making and Metalsmithing Techniques: Sarah Lock

Instruction will focus on the concepts and skills required to design and work in metals. Tools and techniques covered include “hard” soldering with a torch, simple chain making, metal forming, cutting, chasing, stamping, and finishing. With the instructor’s guidance, students will use jeweler’s pliers, hammers, stakes, files, and polishing wheels to create wearable sculpture (jewelry items), or small free-standing compositions. All tools and materials are provided, including brass and copper sheet wire. Silver and semi-precious stones will be available for purchase at cost. Students may bring their own stones or other materials. www.oasisfineartsandcrafts.org

Fall 2014 : Workshop : Drawing Discoveries: A Non-Traditional Approach to Drawing:

Challenge habitual ways of working and energize mark-making with a series of imaginative drawing exercises developed for and practiced by the instructor. Students will use unconventional and inexpensive drawing materials in this workshop, and will engage in the task of finding “accuracy in expression.” The drawing exercises will vary in duration with the purpose of stretching one’s hand/eye coordination, memory and technique. Scissors, paper, acrylic paint, pencil and charcoal are a few of the materials used to encourage artistic fluency. A live model will pose on Sunday for figure drawing exercises. http://www.arch.virginia.edu/people/directory/c-pamela-black
