Fall 2015 : Class : Theory and Practice of Painting: Session II: Ron Boehmer

Emphasis will be on individual critique and personal development of skills. Class will meet outdoors when possible to focus on plein-air painting processes. Instruction includes group discussions and demonstrations by instructor as appropriate. Students may work in any painting or drawing medium, and should have at least basic previous experience in painting and/or drawing. Fall 2015 : Class : Figure Drawing: Jeffery Stockberger

This class will focus on mastering the nuances and complexities of the body’s representation in art while working from a live model. Through individual and group instruction, you will develop and improve composition, technique, and tonal development while concentrating on the human form as a means of expression. Fall 2015 : Class : Still Life Painting: Jeffery Stockberger

Explore the concept of indirect painting. Working from still life, students will concentrate on developing a painting’s composition and color palette by responding to and building on marks made on the canvas. Through group and individual critiques, you will work on establishing good oil painting habits and techniques. Fall 2015 : Class : Beginning and Intermediate Drawing & Painting: Janly Jaggard

This class introduces the foundation skills of drawing and painting by learning the significance and application of the formal elements – line, form, shape, space, texture and then color. Students will draw from still life, interior space and possibly the figure, to understand the principles of rendering three-dimensional form on a two dimensional surface – the essence of art. Intermediate students build skills and work toward developing personal style in the medium of their choice. Fall 2015 : Class : Baginning Painting: Jeffery Stockberger

This class will focus on the fundamentals of painting and its craft. Through exercises, demonstrations and discussions, we will explore building a painting, creating a foundation, choosing a subject, creating a strong composition, working with light and color, mixing paint, understanding tools and creating overall good studio habits. Fall 2015 : Class : Art as Exploration: Critique Class: Robert Stuart

Participants bring their work in any media for constructive criticism. The goal is growth as an artist through a deepening discernment of strengths and challenges in one’s work. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Transitioning to Abstraction II: The Next Step: Janly Jaggard

If you are looking for opportunity for an intensive retreat where you and your creative process are your only real focus, this mid-week workshop is for you. Returning students and any student with a serious need for uninterrupted studio time and a desire to develop a personal approach to the issues of abstraction, will find this workshop helpful. Three full days will be devoted to painting, exploration of methodologies, inspiration, and lots of discussion (group and one-on-one with Janly) on topics including subject matter, developing a composition, surface quality, color and materials. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Introduction to Screen Printing:

This information packed workshop will introduce the materials and methods of screen printing in a lecture and demonstration format. Participants will tour the printmaking facilities at JMU and have an opportunity to work with tools, equipment, materials and handle actual examples of the medium from the JMU Printmaking Program’s collection. Topics will include preparing screens, creating transparencies, registering multiple colors, ink mixing, and printing methods. Participants will receive a large packet of notes and information to guide them through successful screen printing on their own. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Travel Sketching Workshop:

Next time you’re on vacation and are struck by a sight you’d like to record, don’t snap a photo, reach for your sketchbook instead! This one-day workshop will get you started. You’ll learn how a minimum of time and equipment can actually work to your advantage. Using a technique devised by the instructor especially for this purpose, you will see how you can start capturing such varied possibilities as scenery and architecture, activity and commotion, fellow travelers and interesting faces and figures. Most of all, you’ll see how travel sketching – far from simply recording your trip – can become a treasured component instead.


Winter 2016 : Workshop : Painting with Fire: Vitreous Enamel on Copper: Janly Jaggard

Vitreous Enamel is colored powered glass which is fused onto metal at high speed and temperature using a kiln. This workshop will focus on the painterly aspects and issues of working with the medium, working on copper panels. Students will be introduced to a range of techniques. Winter 2016 : Workshop : A Brush with Music: Watercolor Workshop: Peg Sheridan

Many of us love to paint while listening to background music, but what if we painted because of the music, interpreting music to create visual art? Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Stuart Davis and David Hockney have used musical compositions to inspire themes, motifs, compositions and color, to produce wonderful works of art. You can do it too. Participants will gain ideas for incorporating music into their artistic practice, responding to music with their brushes. We’ll explore different types of music and paint our reactions to them, and discuss how rhythm, pattern, tone and color are ideas that apply to music as well as painting. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Avoiding the “Wax Museum”…or, maybe not: A Critique Session with Paul Ryan:

Paul Ryan is a painter and art critic who teaches drawing, painting and courses on contemporary art and art criticism at Mary Baldwin College, and critical theory in the MFA program at Virginia Commonwealth University. His writing has appeared in publications such as Art Papers Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, ArtLies, and Art in America. His work is represented by Reynolds Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, and his paintings are in numerous public, corporate, and private collections. Employing his experience as an art practitioner and critic, Paul will lead a group critique/discussion of work by the participants, and a group discussion of an essay to be distributed several days in advance of the session. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Painting Workshop: Interiors: Matt Klos

Maryland artist Matt Klos has been a painter of interiors in his studio and home for over a dozen years. In this workshop he will teach about aspects of value, color and geometry as they relate to creating an interior. Several short lectures will accompany demonstrations on various painting approaches and concepts. Students need not be advanced but should have some previous exposure to oil or acrylic painting. Winter 2016 : Workshop : Take Painting to the Next Level!: Karen Blair

Every painter has strengths – for some it is a sense of color, for others good mark-making or composition. This workshop is designed for artists who want to move beyond their known strengths and comfortable painting habits, to push their work in new and exciting directions. Karen will lead exercises designed to “push” color and shape and improve ways of “seeing”, demonstrate various materials and methods including oil sticks, oil pastels and paint, and provide individual instruction and critiques.
