Winter 2020 : Class : Dynamic Still Life and the Surrounding Spaces: Martin Geiger
Join BSSS instructor Martin Geiger in developing your still life. Bring your own set-up to class, or work off of a still life he creates. By learning new painting techniques and taking a step back from your subject, you will see your personal practice grow dramatically! Be challenged over this eight week journey to improve your practice in the new year through guided instruction and the exciting new perspectives of your peers.
Winter 2020 : Class : Beginner & Intermediate Drawing & Painting: Janly Jaggard
Do you want to learn to draw or paint yet never have the time or courage? This beginner and intermediate class will guide you through the process of learning to see through an artist’s eye. Instructor Janly Jaggard will offer one-on-one instruction to show you how to work from direct observation as you experience drawing processes that lead you forward towards the medium of your choice. If you have some experience but know there is more to learn, Janly will help you continue to improve your technical skills as you begin to develop your personal style. Janly instructs several drawing, painting and enameling classes and workshops for BSSS. She has more than forty years of teaching experience and her teaching style is one that anticipates a serious quest on the part of the student who wants to develop a sound foundation of knowledge. She exhibits regionally, nationally and internationally and has participated in several group and solo shows. Janly studied sculptural ceramics as an undergraduate earning a BFA from The West of England College of Art and Design, Bristol, England. Vitreous enamel on copper as a medium for wall work was introduced a few years later and is now central to her practice along with painting. In 2015 Janly was awarded an MA in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts, England.
Winter 2020 : Class : Watercolor Studio: Peg Sheridan
If you have some watercolor experience and would like to pursue your own projects with help from an experienced instructor, this is the class for you. You will start by defining your own goals for the class and establishing a plan, with help from Peg. She will refer you to other painters’ works, suggest techniques to practice at home, and offer one-on-one assistance. An emphasis will be placed on strong value sketches and color palettes as a basis for your paintings. Weekly demonstrations will be offered, based on the needs of the class. Join instructor Robert Stuart at the BSSS gallery and bring your work in any media for constructive review. The goal is growth as an artist through a deepening discernment of strengths and challenges in one’s work. Artistic development will also be supported with the study of current art exhibitions and topics in contemporary art. Exhibition catalogs, articles on art, and pertinent visual material will be presented and discussed at the beginning of class. Fall 2019 : Workshop : Studio Lock-In: Janly Jaggard
Join BSSS instructor Janly Jaggard as she facilitates a two-day studio lock in! This lock-in is for those interested in escaping their own creative space this fall and joining a small group in a dynamic journey of uninterrupted studio time! There will be no formal instruction, but as facilitator, Janly will schedule several informal group critique and feedback sessions, as well as structure each day’s lunch and breaks. This is the perfect opportunity to gift yourself the time you need to start that new series or change your scenery for some new inspiration while surrounding yourself with like-minded artists.
Fall 2019 : Workshop : Williamsburg Oils Lecture/Demonstration: Amy Shawley
The Williamsburg Oils lecture is a two hour free educational presentation that covers topics essential to oil painting. During this event, attendees will learn about sizes & grounds, using oil over acrylics, pigment grind, color properties, oil mediums, varnishing, solvent-free painting practices, and health & safety! You will also get the opportunity to do several short hands-on exercises that feature some of our favorite ways to work with Williamsburg colors. Each attendee will receive a color chart, product literature, and a small box of oil paint samples to take home.
Fall 2019 : Workshop : Golden Paints Mixed Media Lecture & Demonstration: Amy Shawley
Learn about the wide range of Golden acrylic paints and mediums, along with the new QoR Watercolors, and discover how they can enhance your Mixed Media projects! Get a good understanding of each product, their different attributes, and how to make the right choices in grounds and colors for the best intended application. Learn what to put under paint, and how to layer, create washes, stains, and collage! We will cover a variety of tools and techniques including the use of stencils, paint markers, dry media, image transfers, iridescent colors, and how to create encaustic-like effects. This is a great place for beginners and experienced artists alike to learn new techniques and be inspired by innovative applications.
Fall 2019 : Workshop : Developing Expressive Portrait Paintings: DARREN KINGSLEY
Capturing the likeness, gesture, anatomy, and personality of a live model depends largely on the accuracy of the initial marks on a canvas. If those aren’t right, the finished painting won’t be right and no amount of detailing will correct those flaws. In this workshop, Darren Kingsley will focus on that initial definition of the model through a painting. You will study the portrait in ways which will allow you to translate a three-dimensional reality into a two-dimensional painting that conveys the fullest possible sculptural form. From there you can build pai
ntings that have a complete range of colors as well as accurate, relative value calibrations. You will execute all the concepts Darren explains through an application of opaque and semi-opaque oil paint in the light and shadow areas. Fall 2019 : Workshop : Capturing Breathtaking Plein Air Scenes in Oil & Pastel: Maria Reardon
Students of all levels of experience are welcome to enjoy the fun of plein air painting using the vibrant colors of soft pastels or the fluidity of oil paints to create dramatic and expressive paintings. Paint the feeling of atmosphere in skies and clouds. Learn how to put variation in the multitude of greens in a landscape. Learn how to make water look wet and reflective. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of plein air painting and how working from life can improve their work. Maria will present demonstrations and offer lots of personal attention. There will be lots of painting and creative time with other artists while enjoying the beauty of the natural landscape.
This workshop will take place on the grounds of Maria’s private family farm in Goshen, VA (a 30 minute drive from BSSS) – an excellent opportunity to paint somewhere new and exciting! If you missed either of Lynn’s successful workshops on plein air painting, she will now help you explore the use of color studies and reference photographs to continue pursuing better studio landscape paintings. Fall 2019 : Class : Learning to See: Start or Improve Your Drawing Journey; Fall I & II: Janly Jaggard
This series of classes is designed to introduce students to the visual arts. It is perfect for both absolute beginners, and for those looking to refresh their focus and revisit the fundamental building blocks of their personal practice. You will begin with the basics of observational drawing and move at your own pace towards your goal. Janly teaches in a one-on-one format where each student receives a personalized course of action, ensuring individual growth and success. Though goals take time, you will find the journey is rewarding! Janly will introduce various forms of color mediums per individual interest and readiness.

Fall 2019 : Class : Intermediate Drawing & Painting FALL I & II: Janly Jaggard
This series of classes is designed to take students beyond the basics of observational drawing and color application. Students identify their personal goals with regard to medium of choice and genre of work to explore. Drawing, painting, and various design applications are all welcome. This program fosters a rich learning environment that extends beyond just your time in the studio classroom. You will benefit from one on one attention to your studio work, suggestions for at-home approaches, as well as references for relatable artists to research for inspiration and study.

Fall 2019 : Class : Learning From the Masters II: Peg Sheridan
You can learn a lot by studying the methods and paintings of masters in watercolor painting. Furthermore, they will inspire you to try new techniques in your own work! Join us as we study the work of artists such as Winslow Homer, James McNeill Whistler, Charles Demuth, along with more contemporary watercolorists, such as Skip Lawrence and Zoltan Szabo. We will look at each artist’s techniques, and try them on our own paintings. You choose works that inspire you, and either copy them or use what you learned from their work to enrich paintings of your own images.
