Fall 2019 : Class : Indirect Painting: Still Life & Figure: Jeffery Stockberger

Explore the concept of indirect painting: developing an image and resolving problems through multiple layers of paint. Working from still life and a model, you will concentrate on developing a painting’s composition and color palette by responding to and building on marks made on the canvas. Through group and individual critiques, you will work on establishing good oil painting habits and techniques. Students will work from still life compositions the first four weeks of class and then from a figure the second half of the class. You may work in other painting materials with the permission of instructor. A materials list will be provided upon registration, but is available through the office should you have any questions before registering. www.jefferystockberger.com

Fall 2019 : Class : Go for Baroque in Rome!: Dr. Sara N. James

The seventeenth century was one of the most exciting periods in history, especially in Rome, with huge changes underway in religion, science, navigation, education, book production, and international trade. The Baroque art and architecture that this vibrant age inspired are equally transformed. This style, which developed in Rome, was closely linked with the Counter-Reformation and the Catholic Church—which, at the Council of Trent, decreed that the arts should communicate religious dogma and direct emotional response. The impact is enormous! Artists begin to break away from proscribed conventions and express their inner voices — and what expression they find! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Spring 2019 : Workshop : Studies of Degas Paintings with Acrylics: JAMES DEAN ERICKSON

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) experimented with so many ways of painting — with oils, pastels, monotypes, and other media — so his art is the perfect starting point for learning about the creative possibilities of acrylic paints and mediums. James, who is now one of the most popular instructors at BSSS, will help you take advantage of the fluidity, drying time, texture, glazing, and adhesion of acrylics. www.jamesdeanerickson.com

James earned his BA at The University of Virginia while running varsity track and cross country. He received several honors and awards at UVA including The Aunspaugh Fifth-Year Art Fellowship. In 2011, James earned his MFA at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and now exhibits his work throughout the east coast. His paintings explore the space between realism and abstraction bringing to mind the ephemeral and enduring qualities of nature.

Spring 2019 : Workshop : Watercolors With a Surface: Exploring Gouache & Casein: Frank Hobbs

During this workshop with one of BSSS’s most popular instructors, you will investigate the exciting ranges of possibilities available with both gouache and casein, two opaque, water-soluble paints. Frank will take you through explorations of color, technical processes, and composition on a variety of traditional and non-traditional surfaces. The creative options with both media include the transparent effects of watercolor but, by being opaque, they also have the potential for building rich translucencies, opacities, and textural surfaces like oils or acrylics.

Frank Hobbs is Associate Professor of painting and drawing at Ohio Wesleyan University, in Delaware, OH. A native of Virginia, Hobbs studied art at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and later at American University in Washington, DC, where he earned his Master of Fine Art in1984. A co-founder of the Beverley Street Studio School in 1992, Hobbs lived and had his studio in Staunton for 15 years. In addition to conducting courses at the BSSS, he also taught at Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute. Hobbs’ paintings have been exhibited both in the U.S. and abroad in Ankara, Turkey, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Bermuda, through the Arts in Embassy Program of the U.S. State Department. His work is in numerous public and private collections internationally. The artist has received fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Most recently, Hobbs is the recipient of an Individual Excellence in Art Award from the Ohio Arts Council. To see more about Frank, please visit http://frank-hobbsart.com.

Spring 2019 : Workshop : Using Color Studies & Photos for Bigger, Better Landscapes: LYNN MEHTA

Following up on Lynn’s successful workshop on painting big, bold landscapes, she will now help you explore the use of plein air color studies (weather permitting) and reference photographs to continue pursuing bigger and better studio landscape paintings. In addition, she will help you adapt an Impressionist style of painting, one that gives viewers the surprise of imagination and discovery. You will look closely at your paintings to see the abstraction of colors, shapes, and brushwork; and when you step back from the canvas you will see the representation of a subject in detail. “I want to help workshop participants make the journey that has captivated me so they can present their own view of the world,” she explains. A materials list provided upon registration. www.lynnmehta.com

The paintings Lynn Mehta creates are the art of Impressionism. It is important for her to give the surprise of discovery when looking closely at her paintings and then stepping back, allowing room for imagination. She works and paints in her home studio in Alexandria, Virginia. Lynn holds a BA in Art from San Diego State University and has studied with internationally acclaimed plein air artists in the US and abroad. In May 2016, she completed an artist residency in Acadia National Park. A recipient of over 60 awards, Lynn recently received Best Use of Light at Mountain Maryland Plein Air 2017 and was honored with the Best in Show award in BSSS Queen City Plein Air Festival 2016. Lynn has been a featured artist in Plein Air Magazine and Hill Rag and she is included in the publication 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic. Spring 2019 : Workshop : Short Pose Portrait Painting: DARREN KINGSLEY

Capturing the likeness, gesture, anatomy, and personality of a live model depends largely on the accuracy of the initial marks on a canvas. If those aren’t right, the finished painting won’t be right and no amount of detailing will correct those flaws. In this workshop, Darren Kingsley will focus on that initial definition of the model through a paintings. You will study the portrait in ways which will allow you to translate a three-dimensional reality into a two-dimensional painting that conveys the fullest possible sculptural form. From there you can build paintings that have a complete range of colors as well as accurate, relative value calibrations. You will execute all the concepts Darren explains through an application of opaque and semi-opaque oil paint in the light and shadow areas. This workshop is a special opportunity for artists interested in figure and portrait painting. www.darrenkingsley.com

The class will begin with demos in the mornings explaining the concepts for the day followed by studies of those concepts and insightful critiques. The last day will begin with a demo in the morning followed by a long pose.

Day One Schedule

  • Morning Demo
  • 3-hour afternoon pose

Day Two Schedule

  • Demos throughout the day
  • 6 hour pose

Spring 2019 : Workshop : Key Elements to Painting From Life:

Art teachers often complain their students just don’t use enough paint, with the result being their paintings wind up with oil colors that are overworked and dull. George is brilliant at maintaining luscious, shimmering, thick qualities of oil colors that accurately describe the figures, barns, shorelines, clouds, and vegetation in his painting. George has won top awards in many plein air festivals and competitive art exhibits; and he is one of the liveliest, skilled, and passionate artists working today. Depending on the weather, George will either work from a clothed model in the studio or he will set up outdoors. The point of his workshop is to see and paint any subject accurately and expressively. George will stress alla prima painting and the use of loose and fast approaches to capturing the figure or landscape in the first try. Please bring your own plein air equipment, supports, and media (oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic). A materials list will be provided after registration. www.georgevanhookfineartist.com

Van Hook thinks of his paintings as primarily a visual response to the selected environment, be it landscape, figure, or still life. “I want the color to be beautiful and the drawing firm and secure”, he says. “The paintings are a marriage of external and internal forces – what emerges on the canvas should be a reflection of both the beauty of the world and the artist’s most inner response.” Van Hook began painting at an early age and his work is influenced by his experiences in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, coastal Maine, and Europe where he traveled extensively. Following college, he left for Paris and spent nearly a year copying paintings at the Louvre and traveling through France, Italy and Holland making numerous paintings en plein air. He is now settled with his family in Cambridge, New York where his works are in many prominent fly fishing collections connected with the nearby American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester, Vermont. Van Hook, a nationally recognized artist has won numerous Plein Air competitions and awards from around the country for his oils and watercolors. George teaches Plein Air workshops around the country.
