Spring 2019 : Workshop : Atmosphere, Color Harmonies & Pleasing Compositions With Acrylics: Jeremy Sams
In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to watch and learn from a painting demonstration by the award-winning North Carolina artist, Jeremy Sams, and then practice what you have just learned. Well known for the oil-like quality of his acrylic paintings, Jeremy will demonstrate how he achieves this look along with composing the elements within the painting and capturing light and atmosphere in the landscape. During the workshop, he will focus on the principles of creating a pleasing composition, how you can achieve color harmony, and how you can capture those special light effects that we’re so often attracted to in landscape paintings. Jeremy’s goal is for you to create a finished painting that encapsulates each of the principles discussed. A materials list

Spring 2019 : Workshop : Lecture: Approaching the Landscape With Acrylics: Jeremy Sams
Jeremy’s paintings prove just how versatile acrylic paintings can be! They don’t have any of the poster-like, hard-edge surfaces often associated with the water mixable paints and his landscapes have the balance of hard and soft edges, atmospheric depth, color harmony, and rich details one
associates with oil paintings. During this one-hour lecture, Jeremy will look at a brief history of the acrylic colors and mediums, and he will review their benefits and challenges while taking you through a journey of his own work and painting approach. www.jeremysams.com

Fall 2018 : Workshop : Sketching Tips for Travelers Demonstration: Peg Sheridan
In celebration of Peg and Betty’s recently scheduled Travel Study trip to the Coast of Maine, they will be demonstrating and sharing helpful tips and tricks to document YOUR unique travel experiences.
Next time you are on vacation and are struck by a sight you’d like to record, don’t snap a photo, reach for your sketchbook or travel journal instead! This fun and casual two-hour lecture and demonstration will help get you started.
Peg will kick off the afternoon with a watercolor painting demonstration. She will show how to best capture rocks, waves, and seascapes – prominent sights on the Coast of Maine. Betty, with a background in biology and ecology, will then demonstrate how to capture nature’s smaller details with pencil and pen sketches. She will also show you how to create a personalized travel journal specific for your needs. Both instructors will discuss potential materials, supplies and resources. Most of all, you’ll see how travel sketching can become a treasured component of YOUR TRAVELS!

Winter 2019 : Class : Winter Tune In & Tune Up – Session I: Janly Jaggard
Sign up for sessions I & II before January 11 and receive a 5% discount on total price.
Start the new year with three days of stretching your mind, sharpening your skills, and discovering your artistic potential. You’ll work on beginner or intermediate skill building in drawing and painting and participate in critique sessions to share your successes. Beginners will learn to draw from direct observation, introducing you to a drawing process that can lead you towards accomplished and successful work in the medium of your choice. Intermediate students will be guided to improve technical skills towards development of a personal style. At the end of Session 1, you will be ready to practice new skills beyond the BSSS studio and ready for continued study in Session 2. Bring a bag lunch so that class can continue with art appreciation that relates to areas of interest within the group and will broaden the scope of the class. Winter 2019 : Class : Watercolor Set Free: Capturing the Essence of a Subject: Peg Sheridan
Do you tend to start loose in your paintings, only to tighten up and lose the freshness? This class will help you to overcome that habit by simplifying designs, using big brushes, and capturing the essence and energy of the subject. You will soon see that the fluid, spontaneous nature of working this way is more fun than you’ve ever had with watercolor! Painting subjects will vary each week, and you will bring your own ideas and references. The final stages of adding detail, line, darks, and pops of color will be valuable tools to have in completing all of your paintings. Peg will offer critiques, color worksheets, and one-on-one help. Bring your work in any media for constructive review. The goal is growth as an artist through a deepening discernment of strengths and challenges in one’s work. Artistic development will also be supported with the study of current art exhibitions and topics in contemporary art. Exhibition catalogs, articles on art, and pertinent visual material will be presented and discussed at the beginning of class. Winter 2019 : Class : Independent Study With Expert Assistance: Elizabeth Geiger
If you are a painter who needs insightful, directed evaluations of your work by a professional, then this is the class for you. Elizabeth Geiger, one of the most outstanding artists in the Valley, is offering this three session class to provide you with one-on-one conversations about your paintings, individual projects, time accountability, individual and group critiques, and words of encouragement to better direct your work and development as an artist. The first class will start on January 18, 2019 with thirty minutes of intense, one-on-one conversation during which Elizabeth will assign a project idea specific to your artistic need. Projects may include a specific number of paintings, subjects, and/or artistic element to focus on (composition, color, tone, drawing, etc.). The second session on February 8th will include a critique of your assigned works progress; and the March 1st class will be a final group critique of a selection of the work created during the six week class. Explore the concept of indirect painting: developing an image and resolving problems through multiple layers of paint. Working from still life, you will concentrate on developing a painting’s composition and color palette by responding to and building on marks made on the canvas. Through group and individual critiques, you will work on establishing good oil painting habits and techniques. You may work in other painting materials with the permission of instructor. Winter 2019 : Class : The High Renaissance and Mannerism in Florence: Dr. Sara N. James
This course will give a window into the flowering of the High Renaissance and Mannerism in Florence (1480-1600). You will study the art, architecture, and urban planning in the context of politics, religion, the social situation, history, economics, and the cultural atmosphere that will help you understand why Florence flourished in ways that few cities have before or since. Featured artists include architect Leon Battista Alberti, and artists Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo, Andrea del Sarto, Bronzino, and Giorgio Vasari. Dr. James is an independent scholar and lecturer who holds a Ph.D in Art History from the University of Virginia and has over thirty years of teaching experience. She has published two highly acclaimed art history books and is on faculty of OLLI at UVA and Smithsonian Journeys.

Winter 2019 : Workshop : Botanical Pen & Watercolor: Lara Call Gastinger
During this one-day workshop, you will learn pen and watercolor techniques that come in handy when you are journaling or traveling. You’ll learn how to sketch with a pen, use lines or dots to render shade, and use watercolor to add meaningful color to the composition. Winter 2019 : Workshop : Chromatic Perspective & Mixology: Aaron Thompson
This still-life painting workshop will offer you both theoretical and practical ways to apply and control color. Aaron will help you reduce a motif to flat, accurate shapes so it will be easier to discuss various principles of color such as temperature, chroma, and chromatic perspective. Designing still-life setups and identifying possible “found” motifs will be part of the discussion. Oil paint is the suggested medium but you can also work with acrylics. Aaron Michael Thompson is a Full-time Professor at the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. He is also one of Gamblin Artist Colors Educational Representatives and has given lectures on color at Museums and Institutions of Higher Education for seven years. He received his M.F.A. from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and his B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art and Design. He was recently published in Observational Drawing, and among his most recent awards include the Premier Coup Award from the a national juried exhibition, the Nude, at the Wayne Art Center and the Barnes Artist residency in Umbria, Italy.
Winter 2019 : Workshop : Traveling with Watercolors: Robin Poteet
Robin is a professional artist and popular instructor at The Studio School in Roanoke, VA, and she teaches a variety of workshops throughout the mid-atlantic. She is also in her 10th year of co-leading overseas painting trips to France, Italy and the UK. During this workshop, you will enjoy two days of making art based on your observations on location. Robin will discuss materials and how to travel light, the nuances of planning and painting in public places, dealing with ever-changing light, and taking candid photos. You will learn how to create your own books (a surprisingly easy process), and techniques for working in pen & ink, watercolor, and watercolor pencil. Demos will be short and to the point so you can have ample time to sketch and paint from your own photos with individual attention as Robin circulates throughout the room. Supplies for this workshop will be basic, and all levels of painters can benefit, including true beginners. Winter 2019 : Workshop : Painting Winter Scenes in Pastel From Photos: Maria Reardon
What better way to spend the cold days of January, than to enjoy the comforts of a warm studio setting while painting winter landscapes? With your own photo references as inspiration, we will use soft pastel to paint snowy scenes which will include subjects such as mountains, rivers, farms and barns. Learn how to capture the look and feel of a cold winter’s day and snowy landscape effectively. Bring your favorite photo references, pastel papers and pastel colors as we paint the beauty of the outdoors while inside! Maria will present demonstrations, instruction for all levels of experience and lots of personal attention. There will be lots of painting time and comradery with other artists. Winter 2019 : Workshop : Drawing Light & Shadow: JAMES DEAN ERICKSON
On a very basic level, your ability to identify objects or people … especially from a distance … is dependent on the pattern of light falling on the person and the shadows that are cast. That perception is sometimes referred to as the “yearbook identity,” meaning that even when you see an out-of-focus photograph of someone in a high school yearbook, you recognize them because of the pattern of light and shadow. We’re excited that James, who is already a popular instructor at BSSS, will show you how to capture the identifying pattern of light and shadow on a variety of subjects using graphite, charcoal, or ink drawing materials.
