Fall 2017 : Workshop : Prints with Freezer Paper and Collage: Karen Rosasco

Join Karen Rosasco for a one-day workshop creating unique “prints” using acrylic paint transferred from freezer paper. This is a simple, easy, and creative way of exploring materials. No previous experience required. The subject matter, style, and final presentation of the monotypes will be open to your preferences. You will first draw a design on the dull side of the freezer paper, then “ink” with acrylics on the glossy side of the freezer paper, and finally transfer the painted acrylics onto blank sheets of paper or sheets already covered with collage or paint. The magic happens when the freezer paper is pulled back! Demonstrations and one-on-one guidance will be provided. www.karenrosasco.com

“Karen is able to help individuals solve problems wherever they are on their art journey.”

Fall 2017 : Workshop : Understand & Use Modern Concepts: Karen Blair

This workshop will explore the work of Henri Matisse and his influence on contemporary painters, including Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, and David Park. You will learn why the work of these artists continues to resonate with many artists working today because of its reliance on color, the illusion of space and decisive mark making. Open to intermediate and advanced painters, the workshop will include demonstrations and ample one-on-one consultations to help you explore ways to take your work in new and exciting directions. Acrylic and oil painters are welcome! www.karenblairartist.com

“Karen is very good at seeing each person’s potential and encouraging it, as well as offering ways to progress into new ways of seeing and painting. The atmosphere of the workshop is friendly, fun, and encouraging.”

Fall 2017 : Workshop : Still Life Painting, Bauhaus and Beyond: Elise Schweitzer

Color theory is a powerful tool for painters, but the “logic” of theory can be very mysterious. In this workshop, you will get to the bottom of the most familiar color theory from the German Bauhaus school of art. You’ll explore this system of wheels and scales by recreating classic color charts in paint. Then you will apply the ideas to a two-day Bauhaus themed still-life painting. Along with these studio projects, you will explore how the social and political world of Germany in the interwar years inspired these foundational ideas about color. The workshop will involve painting from the still-life arrangements, looking at fantastic images of Bauhaus art, and having lively discussion.

Fall 2017 : Workshop : Perceptual Painting with the Landscape, Interior, and the Figure: Matt Klos

BSSS is excited to host these two out-of-state artists and instructors for a unique workshop. They are both part of the Perceptual Painters group that “explores contemporary observational painting with some
type of modernistic view.” (www.perceptualpainters.com). Brian and Matt will share their approaches to painting in free lectures and an information packed workshop. You will have the opportunity to watch demonstrations and receive help from both instructors as you paint the figure in both landscape and interior settings (weather permitting). Learn more about materials, color and light, composition, and modes of observation. Brian says “the purpose of painting is to tap into something that is profoundly human, something sensual that lies on the fringe of memory, a reality both strange and familiar.” www.mattklos.comwww.brianrego.com

“Matt is a wonderful teacher, very knowledgeable about art history, and has a keen eye. His focus on relationships and the artwork as a whole gave me a new understanding of my approach to painting.”
