Fall 2012 : Class : Exploration and Process: Robert Stuart

Participants bring new work for group criticism led by the instructor.  The goal: growth as an artist through risk-taking and exploration – the creative process – and a deepening discernment of challenges, strengths and direction in one’s work.  Topics for discussion will also include: museum exhibitions; selective gallery shows; reviews; art now and in the past.  Attending certain exhibitions within our region will be strongly recommended.

Winter 2013 : Workshop : Still Life Painting Workshop:

The class will be working from one still life for two days.  Instructor Rick Weaver will help students compose their own still life and will work with them on ideas about arranging a still life so that it “works” from multiple points of view.  We will then cover some foundation ideas about composition and will work through the still life with periodic individual and group critiques. 


Winter 2013 : Workshop : Abstraction by Design: Karen Rosasco

Join Karen for a three-day watermedia workshop for all levels of participants.  Karen will emphasize the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design with daily demos and individual critiques using a variety of media including Golden Fluid Acrylics, powdered charcoal and collage.  Students will work on four paintings at a time using multiple layers of media by first employing the common design schemes, but eventually creating their own abstract compositions from sketches and photos.


Winter 2013 : Workshop : Enameling: Three Days of Electric Color: Janly Jaggard

This workshop will provide time and head-space to be uninterrupted as creative process gets your full attention.  Various ways of creating image from sources of inspiration that have been gathered prior to the workshop, will develop into rich and vibrant surfaces of transparency and opacity, as abstract or literal as you choose.  Enameling is an infectious medium that uses extreme heat, fast firing and risk-taking; most practitioners never stop once they begin.


Winter 2013 : Class : Printmaking: All about Monotypes: Dymphna de Wild

This class is suitable for both experienced printmakers as well as beginners.  Different monotype techniques will be demonstrated and practiced, including transfers, stencils, and contact drawing.  Participants may work around a theme exploring still life, abstract, and figurative imagery.


Winter 2013 : Class : Figure Drawing: Jeffery Stockberger

This class will focus on mastering the nuances and complexities of the body’s representation in art while working from a live model.  Through individual and group instruction, you will develop and improve composition, technique, and tonal development while concentrating on the human form as a means of expression.  Formal critiques will also be utilized to reinforce and establish good drawing habits.


Winter 2013 : Class : Intermediate & Advanced Painting & Drawing: Studio: Ron Boehmer

Instruction focuses on developing stronger understanding of composition, color, and painting techniques related to accomplishing greater command of personal statement.  Subject matter includes but is not limited to landscape, still life, figure, and abstract painting genres.  Class involves personal and group critiques and discussions, demonstrations, and individual and group work project.

In this class, each student is taught individually, whether just beginning, recommencing or still finding their path on the road to creative process.  Depending on the starting point, each will practice, initially based on observation, how to use the tools of visual process with a strong concentration on learning visual language such as proportion, perspective and tonal value.  Color is introduced to those who wish to start painting.  Students with more experience and a specific interest are given insight for working towards abstraction with reference to the Principles of Design.

Spring 2013 : Workshop : Composition Marathon: Elizabeth Geiger

Using several objects, painters will explore the possibilities of composition with small fast paintings while rearranging the objects – or themselves – in between.  Day one will focus on black and white, and day two will involve a limited palette.


Spring 2013 : Workshop : Painting Outdoors: Richard Crozier

Early May offers ideal weather for a weekend painting excursion.  Students are welcome to use their medium of choice, painting the Staunton cityscape and nearby rural landscape with the guidance of instructor and UVA professor emeritus Richard Crozier.  There will be an opportunity for individual and group critiques.  Improve observational painting skills while working in plein air.


Spring 2013 : Workshop : Spark Creativity with a Mixed Media Approach: Pat Cook

Bring a stack of your unresolved or “failed” works on paper or canvas and used mixed media to take it in a different direction.  Students will use paint, collage and a variety of drawing materials to add, subtract, and modify their work.  This is a fun and positive way to strengthen your understanding of the principles of design and composition, and can help jump start the creative process. www.patcookart.com
