This class will drop into the act of drawing, and stay a while.  Drawing is often seen as a step in the process toward some other, more finished, work of art.  This class will celebrate drawing as the thing itself — as the point of arrival.

We will delve into various media and tools, exploring how each invites its own way of seeing.  We will spend each class exploring a different element of drawing, such as: the quality of the line, the edge condition, the composition, the space of the page. We will ask questions like “how does one convey flatness vs. depth, and what do these communicate to the viewer?”, “how does the quality of line change the experience of the drawing?”, and “what is the role of empty space or an unfinished edge?”

We will ground these questions in basic, longstanding drawing practices, testing them out through still-life drawing, constructed perspective, and figure drawing from life. Together we will build a toolkit of drawing experiences that we can begin to layer and employ with intention.

Much like the word suggests, “drawing” is an act of pulling something out, of revealing something not yet known. In this class we will get our hands dirty, trying on lots of materials and methods, and consistently reflecting on what we discover and the possibility of what we can say as visual artists. All drawing levels welcome!
