The recent TV mini-series adaptation of the novel, Shõgun by James Clavell, captivated audiences across the nation, and the stunning exhibition of Samurai Armor at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has caused sensational responses among viewers. In this 3-class program, the history and historical figures that inspired the novel, Shõgun, the culture of samurai (warrior class) and exquisite craftsmanship of armor are examined through paintings, costumes, furnishings, and festivals preserved in local communities for centuries.

Topics also include samurai castles which played a significant role during warring, medieval Japan as well as in the peaceful Edo period (1603-1868). PTT presentations and videos will accompany lectures to illustrate the subjects.
