The seventeenth century was one of the most exciting periods in history, especially in Rome, with huge changes underway in religion, science, navigation, education, book production, and international trade. The Baroque art and architecture that this vibrant age inspired are equally transformed. This style, which developed in Rome, was closely linked with the Counter-Reformation and the Catholic Church—which, at the Council of Trent, decreed that the arts should communicate religious dogma and direct emotional response. The impact is enormous! Artists begin to break away from proscribed conventions and express their inner voices — and what expression they find! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
