Winter 2023 : Class : The Next Step. A Short Course in Studio Practice: Janly Jaggard

If you have learned about the principles of design and the formal elements, you may want to build on those basics and work towards personal style. In this short series of intense studio classes we can search for what interests you most about medium, method and subject. You might want to work towards abstraction or developing your color palette or work large drawings of observed spaces. Anything is possible provided you have serious intent.

I will discuss work with each student one-on-one so your journey is personal to your own objectives although class critique and discussion are part of the program.

Students will be strongly encouraged to work independently between the 3 class meetings and to share that work with the class.

Minimum number of students: 5 – maximum: 10

Each student is taught one-on-one which allows for personalized projects, mainly focusing on drawing mediums or painting in acrylics or oils.

Spring 2022 : Workshop : Celebrating the Natural World through Prints!: d’Ann de Simone

Ernst Haeckel

During the first day of our workshop, we will each create a series of drawings that are inspired by the “natural world.” During the second day, we will turn our drawings into prints using the linocut technique — cutting our designs into linoleum blocks, which are then inked and printed onto paper. We will exchange our prints, so that each participant leaves with a suite of images.

We can imagine the subject matter, the natural world, in broad rather than in specific terms. I will prompt participants to challenge their usual ideas of the “natural world” by combining new compositional elements culled from books and the web. Projects will address both the abstract and representational interpretations of Nature and both the macro and the micro.

Among artists we will reference is Ernst Haeckel of the Art Nouveau movement, whose famed series of prints depicting microorganisms, animals and insects sought to link art with science. These works were widely acclaimed and influential during 20th century, leaving a mark seen clearly through the Art Deco movement and well beyond in design, painting, architecture and other disciplines.

Day one will focus on drawing.

Day two will focus on printing.

NOTE: Students will need to bring drawing pad, pens and erasers; workshop fee includes linoleum, brayers, ink and linoleum cutters.

Spring 2022 : Workshop : Plein Air Painting in Watercolor: Peg Sheridan

Discover the joy of painting outside, and visit some of the prettiest places in our area!  You will be amazed at how painting en plein air will increase your skill.  We will learn tools for distilling a complicated scene into connected shapes and values.  Peg will share various methods and tools for plein air painting, and will do demonstrations on site.  You will choose what you paint.  Soon all of your paintings, en plein air or in the studio, will improve.  Subject matter will vary.  We will meet outside at a predetermined location each day, unless the weather is bad (when we will meet in the studio).  The instructor will offer critiques and individual help. A materials list will be provided.

Spring 2022 : Class : Painting Interiors: Abstracting the Everyday: Laura Vahlberg

If you look at a white wall in a dark room, is the color really white? In this weekend workshop we will talk about how to mix nameless colors (like a white wall in a dark room).  In doing this we will also discuss value, temperature and hue and how they can work together to create a feeling like reality. For inspiration we will look at images from art history and to Charles Hawthorne’s revelatory book Hawthorne on Painting.

In addition to color mixing there will be a strong focus on composition. How does an artist assemble shapes and colors on a picture plane in a way that immediately intrigues the eye? We will practice techniques that can help to strengthen the artist’s compositional eye and then address how to tie together observation and abstraction.
